As the phrase goes, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. The same can also be said of being inspired by someone.
Cindy Wise (pictured above, left), senior administrative assistant in our Toledo market, has worked with Vice President of Mission Sr. Dorothy Thum (pictured above, right) for more than 30 years. During that time, Sr. Dorothy has not only come to trust and appreciate Cindy, but she has also adopted some of her methods for how she approaches her own work.
“Cindy asks questions to get better solutions on mission projects, which helps me to think outside the box,” Sr. Dorothy says. “I call her ‘Sherlock Holmes,’ as she is determined to get to the bottom of the issue and provide an approach to solving it. I am reminded of her approach when I hit a brick wall and work to get over it.”
Outside of the day-to-day, Cindy serves as a reminder and beacon of our mission at Mercy Health. She willingly supports our mission projects, whether they occur within the walls of our hospital or outside them. “How can I help?” are words often heard from Cindy – an outlook Sr. Dorothy tries to incorporate into her own ministry.
“Cindy is very trustworthy. I can count on her to do the right thing based on our mission,” she says.
It’s also how Cindy interacts with others, regardless of background, that is a testament to both her personality and as a person of faith. This is not lost on Sr. Dorothy, who says she thinks of this when she interacts with others as well.
“She serves as encouragement to live our mission during good times and difficult ones. She also brightens my day with her positive attitude (and dark chocolate),” Sr. Dorothy adds.
We don’t always find the right time to tell people who inspire us what we think of them. However, sometimes an opportunity comes along.
Sr. Dorothy had this to say to Cindy:
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You have enriched my life for being who you are every day. I always look forward to coming in to work when I know we will connect. You are a true mission ambassador.”
