Julie Young, MSN, RN, at Mercy Health – Mercy College of Ohio as well as Mercy Health – St. Charles Hospital, has been serving within our ministry for all 22 years of her nursing journey. She first felt the call to be a nurse when she was only 12 years old.
“My grandfather had a stroke and spent a month in the hospital and then a rehabilitation center before we lost him,” Julie recalls. “I met many amazing nurses who helped both my grandfather and my family through that very difficult time. That was when I decided that I wanted to follow in that same path.”
Julie began her nursing career on the stepdown unit at Mercy Health – St. Vincent Medical Center.
“While working at St. Vincent’s, I completed the clinical ladder process,” she shares. “During that process, I worked on updating patient and staff education boards, trained new hires and students and worked on performance improvement audits.”
Julie continues, “I really enjoyed the educational component of completing my clinical ladder. That took me to St. Charles Hospital in staff education, where I later had the opportunity to become a credential trainer for Epic, then I worked as a clinical leader.”
While at St. Charles Hospital, Julie worked to further her education, which led her to her current position teaching at Mercy College of Ohio. However, being an educator has not stopped her from practicing nursing.
“In addition to working at Mercy College, I work at St. Charles as a contingent on the progressive care unit and take call shifts as a sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) for a free-standing clinic,” she says. “My favorite thing about being a nurse is knowing that I have made a difference in the lives of others, including patients, their families and students.”
While the COVID-19 pandemic has been a disruptive time for the health care industry, Julie and her team rose to the occasion.
“The pandemic has put stress on the health care profession, forcing them to become stronger and learn to adapt quickly to the frequent changes in guidelines and policies,” she shares. “Luckily, I work with a great team of nurses in both the college and hospital settings. These nurses are compassionate, driven and hardworking. Nursing can be a very challenging profession. I’m proud to be part of a team who supported each other and adapted flawlessly to every change and difficult situation during these times.”
