Before joining Mercy Health – Lorain as a physician assistant practicing in endocrinology, Brian Stevens served as a United States Navy Hospital Corpsman. He spent time stationed at the United States Naval Hospital in Bethesda, MD, as well as on board the USS Saipan in the Mediterranean Sea.
“I’m proud to be a fourth-generation military veteran,” Brain shares. “My grandfathers served in World War II and my father as well as my uncle both served in the Vietnam War.”
While the military tradition of serving your country is strong, so is the tradition of medicine and serving those in your community during their time of need. Brian has seen this type of service in his life as well.
“Additionally, my grandmothers were both registered nurses and my mother was a respiratory therapist as well as a medical assistant,” he says.
And just as Brian has continued this legacy of service, his niece is now following by serving as a United States Navy Hospital Corpsman surgical technologist.
“You could say that service to country and people is in our genes,” Brian says.
When asked what Veterans Day means to him, Brian shares that it is “an opportunity to remember our military and civil service members who made sacrifices for the freedoms we have today. It is a day to honor and grieve the men and women in uniform who gave of themselves, whether life, body, mind, heart or soul. Also, it is a time to honor and respect the families who had to sacrifice time spent with loved ones. Above all, it is the opportunity to show gratitude and appreciation for the good things we have in life because of the sacrifices of others.”
When sharing about his own service, Brian states that it was an honor and a privilege to serve in the United States Navy.
“I was thankfully never in harm’s way; however, the lessons of commitment, discipline, teamwork, sacrifice and duty have been with me for my entire life. … I owe my professional career as a physician assistant to my military experience.”
