Need a Sports Physical for Your Student Athlete? We’ve Got You Covered

Does your high school student need an updated sports physical completed for this school year? Due to COVID-19, the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) is allowing student athletes who’ve had a pre-participation evaluation (PPE) within the last year to conduct their 2020-21 sports physical via a video visit.

Whether safely in our clean facilities, or virtually from the comfort of your own home, we have all of the care options to meet you and your family’s needs.

In the past, Mercy Health had provided mass sports physicals at our partner schools to meet the demands of student athletes. Before COVID-19, at the recommendation of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Mercy Health made the decision to instead encourage these evaluations to be completed by primary care providers in a clinical setting. This allows for a more comprehensive evaluation of student athletes.

“Our goal is always to care for the whole athlete… mind, body, and soul. So, moving sports physicals into the primary care office makes so much sense,” shares Marc Galloway, MD, Director of Sports Medicine, Mercy Health. “It allows a more thorough evaluation of athletes from the people who see them year after year.”

Dr. Galloway is the Medical Director and Head Team Physician for the Cincinnati Bengals and several high schools in the Cincinnati area. He also serves on the OHSAA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee.

You can schedule a virtual or in-office sports physical for your child with a primary care physician by calling their office or requesting an appointment online. For both office visits and virtual visits, you’ll need to make sure your provider has a copy of the OHSAA PPE form to fill out.
