For many new moms, the idea of breastfeeding can be stressful and cause feelings of awkwardness and uncertainty. Learn how Natalie Orange, RN, BSN, a new lactation consultant for Mercy Health is helping give mom the tips and tools they need for breastfeeding success.

Stephanie’s Story

When Stephanie Baer (above right photo) was pregnant with her daughter, Byrdie, she admits breastfeeding made her the most nervous.

“I felt like I had everything I needed to be a mom to Byrdie, except the feeding,” she recalls.

Stephanie started trying to nurse Byrdie right after she was born at Mercy Health – Lourdes Hospital on Easter Sunday 2019.

“I was struggling,” Stephanie says. “She was not a good latcher and we tried everything.”

It was then Stephanie started working with Natalie to help her with breastfeeding her new baby.

Natalie was named the new lactation consultant for Mercy Health – Lourdes Hospital in August 2019 after receiving her certification by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners. Prior to this role, she worked as a surgical technician and RN in the obstetrics department since 2001. Natalie saw a need and felt a calling towards this new career path.

“Natalie was so patient. She never seemed frustrated, which made all the difference in the world.” Stephanie says.

In addition to Natalie, Stephanie mentioned that everyone at Mercy Health – Lourdes Birthing Center, from the nurses to the custodians, went above and beyond to make her birthing experience exceptional.

When it was time to go home, Stephanie felt comforted because Natalie was only a call away. Natalie even invited Stephanie back to the hospital for further breastfeeding mentoring in-person, should she need it.

Stephanie says she owes everything to Mercy Health for helping her with Byrdie.

“If you are looking for genuine, personal and individual care and people who are truly dedicated and devoted to their jobs and to the care of their patients, you should choose Mercy Health,” she says.

Morgan’s Story

Morgan Sporea (above left photo), another patient of Natalie’s, found out she was expecting in September 2018 after trying to get pregnant for over a year. Morgan’s pregnancy with her son, Roman, was smooth until the third trimester. It was at this time that she started struggling with high blood pressure.

Doctors diagnosed Morgan with preeclampsia and she was induced at 36 weeks. Roman was born four weeks early and Natalie was there to help the morning after his birth.

“Natalie was so warm and so sweet,” Morgan recalls. “I didn’t know what I was doing at all. She showed me how the pump worked, what a good latch was, everything. If I hadn’t had her, I wouldn’t have stuck with breastfeeding.”

Morgan also says Natalie’s specialization allowed her to go into more depth on breastfeeding. Since baby Roman was premature, he needed assistance to gain weight. With Natalie’s techniques, he was able to reach a healthy weight quickly.

“She was extremely patience and I don’t think I could’ve done it without her,” Morgan says. “The hospital as a whole was wonderful. They really care. You can tell they love their job and want to make women comfortable and loved.”
