Boost your hydration and your health with these easy infused water recipes.

You’ve likely heard that you should drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day. But for many of us, staying hydrated is still a struggle. Learning how to make flavored water is an easy way to satisfy your taste buds and boost hydration. First, let’s learn why staying hydrated can help our health.

Why it’s important to stay hydrated

People who drink more water report less unexpected hunger and have fewer problems with digestion. These are two of the top reasons that people who stay hydrated stay at a healthier weight.

Being hydrated also helps you make the most out of exercise. When you’re dehydrated, your heart has to work harder to pump blood and deliver oxygen to your cells. A healthy cardiovascular system helps you finish your last mile or that extra set of reps.

Water helps you stay cool, create healthy muscles and joints as well as reduce toxins in the body. It even makes your skin glow. Now that you understand why water is essential, let’s look at one way to help you get more of it.

How to make flavored water

For those who get bored with the taste of plain water, adding fresh fruit and herbs is a game-changer. You may have also heard this called spa water or infused water. However, no matter the name, making flavored water is quick and easy.

Simply start with a 32-ounce pitcher and slices of your desired fruit and/or herbs. Add the ingredients to your water and let them steep in the refrigerator for four to 24 hours. Here are a few of our favorite combinations:

  • Strawberries, lemon and basil
  • Cucumber, jalapeno and mint
  • Pineapple, mint and ginger

We recommend experimenting with the amount of ingredients added until you find what works for you. If you’re having trouble finding a favorite flavor combination, you can also use a single ingredient. Lemon and cucumber are great options.

I tried this last evening and it was a hit with my teenage boys! If you would provide guidance as to how long a "batch" of infused water may be kept, it would be much appreciated. Also, if you could share more combination ideas (preferably fruit only), that would be helpful as well. Thank you!
