One way to keep your immune system strong is with exercise. For those of us working from home or lying low during the current coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, getting a work out in sounds like a great change of pace.
Check out our tips for safe places and ways to stay active in the coming weeks.
Avoid the gym and other public fitness settings
The gym poses a high risk for being exposed to other people’s germs. Many areas of the United States, including Ohio and Kentucky, have started closing gym facilities in order to stop the COVID-19 spread.
The danger is that coronavirus can be spread through touching surfaces an infected person has touched. This means items such as free weights, handles of exercise machines, or gym mats could be contaminated. Wiping equipment down with antibacterial wipes is not a guaranteed method to thoroughly clean your gym.
During this outbreak, it is best to stay home. Utilize your own gym and cardio equipment. Don’t have any? There are many apps and websites that provide free home exercise tips.
Work out alone instead of in groups
Given that group fitness puts people in close proximity, you’ll want to reconsider working out with others for the time being. The CDC recommends staying at least six feet apart from other people in order to reduce opportunities to spread infection from person to person. This is also known as social distancing.
Missing that group mentality during your work out? Research and find some virtual fitness classes. There are many different online services available that help people stay connect with others during their fitness journeys.
Take a break from swimming in public pools
The CDC states there is no evidence that COVID-19 can be spread to humans through the use of pools and hot tubs. However, the CDC has also stated that gatherings of 50 people or more in the coming weeks should be cancelled.
Since you most likely access a pool or hot tub in a place where you come into contact with a lot of people, it is probably best to take a break from swimming at the moment. Instead, take up a new exercise that you’ve been wanting to try in the comfort of your own home.
Stay active outdoors
Take a run, walk or hike outside. With all this extra indoor time, outdoor activities are a great change of pace for your body. Getting some fresh air and soaking up some vitamin D can go a long way for your mental health as well.
As with everything during this outbreak, social distancing is key. When outdoors, be sure to avoid areas with lots of people. Also, avoid touching your eyes, face and month. When you get home, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly right away.
