How to Practice Cough and Sneeze Etiquette During COVID-19

Practicing proper cough and sneeze etiquette is one of the best ways people can help stop COVID-19. We know this virus is mainly spreading through respiratory droplets from an infected person when they cough, sneeze, or even talk. In some cases, it may also spread when a person touches an infected surface or object then touches their mouth, nose or eyes.

Because of the ways COVID-19 can spread, good cough and sneeze etiquette is very important when it comes to protecting others. Even if you are asymptomatic (not showing any symptoms), you can still spread COVID-19 if you have the virus.

If you need to cough or sneeze, be sure to:

  1. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue. Throw your tissue in the trash immediately after use.
  2. If a tissue isn’t available, cough or sneeze into the inside of your elbow. Avoid using your hands.
  3. Wash or sanitize your hands after each cough or sneeze.

Handwashing in general is also an effective way to help prevent the spread of illness. Be sure you are practicing this healthy habit throughout your day, especially before eating or preparing food. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

Additionally, you should be wearing a face mask in public and keeping a physical distance of at least six feet from others at this time. Practicing all three of these preventive actions together is the best way our communities can work to stop this pandemic.
