As a mother, finding the time to take care of yourself can be a difficult task.
When it comes to caring for your children and looking after your own wellbeing, kids always seem to come first. But it is important to remember that taking care of yourself is crucial, not just for yourself but for your loved ones, too.
Michelle Federer, DO, of Mercy Health – East Obstetrics and Gynecology,is here to share some of the health screenings all moms should consider having to ensure their good health.
- Pap Smear: This screening tool is used to detect cervical cancer. Your health care provider will collect a sampling of your cervical cells and send them to the lab for microscope inspection. If the cells look abnormal, your provider will perform further testing to determine if you have developed or are at risk of developing cervical cancer. They may also test for human papillomavirus, which further determines your risk for cervical cancer. Women should start screening for cervical cancer starting at age 21.
- Mammograms: These screening tools are used to detect breast cancer. Recommendations on breast cancer screenings can vary. The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommends starting mammograms at 40 if there is no family history or risk factors for breast cancer. If there is a family history of risk factors, doctors recommend a baseline mammogram at age 35. Remember, if you feel a lump, experience bloody discharge from a nipple or see changes in the shape or texture of your nipples or breasts, call your health care provider right away, even if you don’t meet the minimum recommended mammogram age. Early detection is key to having the best possible outcome.
Gynecologic cancers are not the only health issues that can affect moms. Regularly testing for colon cancer, heart disease, diabetes and hypertension is important as well.
All women should see their primary care provider regularly to discuss preventive measures and health screenings.
