Meet Aureliano F. Urbina, M.Ed., director of operations at Mercy Health – St. Vincent’s Medical Center. In addition to his day-to-day responsibilities, Aureliano also serves as co-chair of our Toledo market’s Leadership Council for Diversity and Inclusion (LCDI).
Diversity & Inclusion is an important strategic priority for our ministry because excellence in this area allows us to better support our team members, care for our patients and better serve our communities. Our LCDI committee is made up of employees who serve in various departments of our ministry, have various backgrounds and are of various races as well as ethnicities.
“The main goal of our council is to create an inclusive culture that fosters equality for our team members and those we serve within the workforce, workplace, marketplace, community and patient experience,” Aureliano shares.
The work of LCDI is important because we must always value people and treat every person with dignity and respect.
“It really comes down to the Golden Rule,” he explains. “LCDI’s focus is truly treat people right by living the mission of our organization. It’s living the core principles of our mission that will make us distinguishable, which ultimately makes Mercy Health a place where people want to work and patients want to receive care.”
As for what drives Aureliano’s personal passion for this work, it also comes down to dignity and respect.
“It is a privilege and honor to be part of an active idea that encompasses my core values of treating everyone with dignity and respect,” he shares. “As Maya Angelou once said, ‘People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But people will never forget how you made them feel.’”
With the celebration of Juneteenth having just taken place, Aureliano and the LCDI share that our Toledo market honored the holiday by hosting a special prayer service that acted as a memorial for those who fought and for those who lost their lives for a worthy cause of justice and freedom.
“Juneteenth is a day of respect and honor, while recognizing the value that each of us bring to the human race,” Aureliano says.
And when asked how Juneteenth connects to the mission or values of Mercy Health, Aureliano has this to share.
“Our mission is to extend the healing ministry of Jesus. To do this, it requires us to love. To love the way Jesus loved people. Without love, our mission is simply a set of words on a wall. Jesus didn’t see race, he saw people. Juneteenth is a celebration of people and reminder of why our great organization exists. The very foundation was built on the idea that all people are equal and deserve to be treated as such.”
