A breast cancer survivor shares the importance of mammograms
Nearly one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. That’s why this October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re focusing on the most effective weapon in the fight against breast cancer: mammograms.
A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast that is safe, highly accurate, and can be completed in as few as 15 minutes. The technique has been around for more than 50 years and is used to look for breast disease in women who appear to have no breast problems.
Annual mammograms play a critical role in the prevention, early detection and treatment of breast cancer. However, you don’t have to take our word alone for it. Check out the below video from a woman who credits a mammogram as saving her life. “You need to make sure you take time to take care of yourself,” she says. “A lot of people are very hesitant about doing things for themselves, but it’s very important that you get your mammograms.”
Throughout the rest of this month, we’ll continue to celebrate breast cancer survivors as well as dig deeper into the disease’s cause, prevention, treatment, and cure. To schedule an appointment for a mammogram in one of Mercy Health’s eight regions, call 1-855-PINK123 or visit Mercy Health today.
